A very economic alternative is the Mesa Studio Preamp. I've heard it's pretty much the same preamp as the Mark iiC+. I used to have one, it had tons of gain and was very direct sounding, but it's tricky to dial in. Mated with a good power amp, I'd say it was very close to 'that' old Metallica tone...but you'll need a good solid 412 cab to handle the lows. my $.02 anyway. mike
