Re: Ampeg V4B Bias Mod, 6550's no good?,etc.
Hey All,
With all due respect to the amp tech, I'm simply not impressed. I have never dealt with him in person, just through the music store. But I took the amp in initially cause it I thought it might have a bias problem and I was very very new to amps. Anyway, the music store said they'd have the tech look at it and wrote a note about biasing, etc. The tubes were initially glowing too. I get the amp back. They said he'd adjusted the bias and the tubes still have a bit of glow.
Bottom line, I think it's a bit tacky for them to charge me $40 for a bias job and have tubes that still glow. If there is something wrong with it other than the bias then they could have told me about it. I would have been happy to get the tubes replaced. But I don't really feel like giving them any more of my money.
That's why I posted here. If you guys think a tech should still look at it, then I will find another tech.
About installing a bias pot...I'm not "comfortable under the hood" yet. But if I never start learning about all of this then I never will be comfortable working with my amps.
I also posted awhile back about building an sb-12 clone. I've ordered parts for that and will start building that amp soon.
Eventually, I'd like to be able to take care of my own amp problems.
Sorry for ranting a bit.
Dan
