Re: Sovtek Mig 50/60
I think for the money they are hard to beat. I don't
like the cabnet construction.. small feet and how the head cabnets are built. But as far as the amp.. transformers are heavy, some other components could be changed to help it. If you compare schematics.. you'll see the differences between the bassman and
the mig sixty is more like the early jcm marshalls.
all through the circuts are just small changes in resistors etc. And the mig 60 uses rectified heater preamp section. the mig 50 is modeled somewhat more after the bassman type or JTM45.. The mig 50 uses 5881 tubes and the mig 60 uses EL34 tubes and has a master volume. Both amps could be used for rock or blues.. The mig 60 uses on the plate and cathode resistors are just a slight bit different than the marshalls. These amps would be great to build.. like Doc said.. get a hoffman board or keystone and put it in there. These amps have a well built chassis. not as flimsy as some new amps i've seen.
one thing also will make the sound is the cabnet and what speakers you use.. If you compare one of these to the price of the real thing.. it is a bargin. I read some of the posts on the link you had. Don't we all wish we had the Traynor amps.. but i think the secret is out on them and they are getting bought up. And Doc is right.. the voltage at my place is like 125.. and the amp Transformer on the sovtek is for 110.. so it will make it somewhat different. Alot of the English amps are like this too.
