I've tried that Matchless design and it worked pretty well with a concertina phase splitter. Smooth distortion and consistent tone right down to almost zero volume. I've heard that the dual pot type is better with a long tail pair PI though.  
 
The Matchless MV needs no extra caps and has no effect on the bias voltage.
