| Ray Ivers | Re: Gas regulator (OC3) in guitar amps? Dominik, The 0C3 is a voltage regulator tube; once its operating voltage has been reached, it keeps the voltage steady within a certain range of current draws (in this case, voltage is held within 2 volts with current flows of 5 to 40 mA). There is a very real advantage to this in terms of reducing or eliminating high-voltage-line hum, and to me an output stage with regulated screens sounds the opposite of, say, a 5Y3 rectifier-powered stage; no 'envelope' or 'sag', just a rock-solid power output up till clipping. There are many other Ampage posters with far more knowledge of regulator technology than I, but I do intend to use a regulated screen/preamp supply in my amp design, whenever I get around to actually building the thing. Does anyone know of a guitar amp design that uses regulated screens? I think it might also be cool to do the reverse - use a 6X4 or some other small tube rectifier for the screen supply to induce 'screen sag' while using a SS rectifier for the plate supply.
