Re: The old 70's vintage Marshall Mark II
I've seen some of those heads on Ebay for sale.
I have a '78 MV 50watt that I just retubed and switched from the 6550's to EL34's. The preamp tubes are 12ax7wa Phillips NOS and the EL34's are Svetlana's. I have to say that the change was well
worth it. It really sounds good now. I use my PC to record using Cubase and I usually play the rhythm parts twice and pan one left and one right. Most of the time I have to record at very low volumes due to the wife and children but I have to say it still sounds really BIG on tape. 50 "tube" watts are really LOUD so I've picked up an old Heathkit monoblock (2 EL84's) and another old phono amp monoblock (2 6V6's) that are around 10 watts that I'm gonna modify for guitar use. That way my head won't get blown off everytime I want to drive the power tubes hard.
