While the input grid resistor appears to not be needed (although Gils Fender description certainly makes sense), they are a necessary evil. Technically, they absolutely represent a potential noise source, and you wouldn't mind not having them, I've asked many old-timers who's opinions I trust, and they always insist that these must be retained. The noise input from the resistor is negligible. The value can be cut down to a few K ohms, but their absence can l can often lead to oscillation or grid current instabilities.
