| Psyhco Bass Guy | Re: Amp tone at home and with the band I've done more than my fair share of Peavey bashing. I have yet to find ANY decent Peavey bass amp, BUT I also share the stage with either a Duel or a Classic 50 and I daresay Shane's (the guitar player) tone is great. Now if you want to get into issues of reliability or roadworthiness, there is a fine argument(not to mention excess weight), but tonally, thay can compete with pretty much the spectrum of guitar amps with varying degrees of sucess. Yes, the lows are compressed and often the phase response is slurred beyond recogniton (Cheap OT's anyone?). They use diode clipping and even op-amps for distortion. A Twin or VT-22 would eat one in HALF a second, not to mention the other guitar player's JCM 800, but they do have some workable tones when properly pampered and fitted with decent tubes. Bottom line, they're a Swiss Army Knife and try to be all things to all players rather than focus on doing one specifc tone and doing it well. In some areas, they succeed, in others they fail, and in still others, they almost get it right. (Although for my money, I think the Fender Hotrod series is better.) FWIW, I also get a kick out of these guys who call ss bass amps with a tube preamp 'hybrid.'If they want to see a REAL hybrid, they should crack open a Peavey 'tube' amp. Psycho >^} |
