| Jim S. | Re: Amp tone at home and with the band When I'm playing with a band, the placement of the amp becomes very important. In general, I have problems hearing myself if the amp is placed directly on the stage floor only a few feet behind my legs. Often, the amp sounds like mud this way -- the treble frequencies are very directional, and they're being directed toward the back of my knees, not my ears. If I try to compensate by cranking up the treble knob or turning on the bright switch, then it might sound OK to me but like razor blades to the audience. I prefer to have the amp either sitting on a chair or milk crate, or sitting on the floor but tilted back 30 to 40 degrees. Placing the amp off the floor can help tame boomy or flabby bass. Tilting the amp back can allow you to really hear the treble frequencies very accurately. It works great for small amps that are being mic'd to the PA. I like that amp/monitor approach -- it's a good way to go if you can trust the soundman to put you in the band mix properly. |
