Even if they get off by 5% they are still 9.5ohms to 10.5 ohms and that is a very small error factor when compared to 1 ohm.}  
 
I'm not sure I follow you here, 5% is 5% whether it is a 5% change from 1 ohm, or 10. The change in voltage measured across either resistor would be the same for a given percentage of drift.

Geez - what kind of iron do you use? :-)  
I don't think I've ever done that kind of damage to a resistor.  
Of course carbon comps will often drift that much or more when you heat them up. They usually will drift back when cooled unless they are old, got cooked really bad or both.
