Could be -- maybe the filter caps are only problematic at high temps. I would definitely change them out though, if you feel up to it. Is it a modulated type of heavy distortion -- like a 120 Hz wave riding on your signal?  
 
Is the speaker gone? does it work all the time when the amp is cold, or is it always distorted now? I would check the output side of the OT for DC (not good). If you find DC there you need to replace the OT. If not, try another speaker and see what happens.  
 
You might try measuring voltages in the power amp section, and other key places. that can often lead to some clues.
