As far as the orange/yellow glow you were describing, you are looking at the tube heater filaments. These are inside the plate. The plate is the large, dull gray enclosure, which is the first thing you see when you look right at the tube. If this big structure begins to glow red, then you have a biasing problem. As far as your opinion that your Marshall sounds better when biased hotter then the factory settings, you're damn right it does! Consider some better tubes as well.
