A JTM45 is definately a Marshall. I've taken older Bassman and converted them to a JTM-45 (just to see what it would sound like) and it didn't sound like a JTM-45. Mind you I only converted the pre-amp over and the power tubes. I didn't change the filter cap values or the OT.  
 
An amp is the sum of it's parts. If you change one part you can alter the tone of an amp and of course of you change several parts you end up with a totally different tone.  
 
I think Rick E. was talking about this at one time but things like the OT's, cap/resistor values, filter caps, etc, all play into this.  
 
I like the JTM-45 more than the Bassman to be honest but there's plenty of guys who love an old Bassman more! (ha, ha)
