This has puzzled me as well! It's sort of like the pyramids, how did they build those so perfectly and how were they able to perform brain operations? I guess we'll never know.

There's amps out there that offer this. Typically speaking this is why I mod Marshalls. People want the extra gain but they also want what the Marshall offers rather then going to a Boogie.  
 
On the other side of the coin I mod Boogies (not that it's much fun because mostly it's a pain in the rump) because most guys want to get rid of the heavy bottem-end and want a nice punchy tone with out all the fartyness (is that a word?) Mostly you have restructure the way the amp structures it's frequencies as well as it's gain. It's a vicious cycle this amp-tone-thing  
 
It's a nice spring day here in upstate NY so I'm a bit giddy. (ha, ha) too much snow will break a man as we all know!
