I like certain Mesa's: Mark 3's, some of the Caliber series, and the newer Recto series. My rule of thumb is to avoid the older models with no eq, eq is mandatory to pull out the excessive mids. Without this, many older Boogies sound very flabby, I must agree. Oddly enough, I know guys that crank the mids+bass on these to get their sound, I don't get it.  
I think if you want a ton of gain at controllable levels, you gotta get a Mesa. If they only made a Marshall with the correct sound and construction and that much gain, that would be an amp!
