You may be having a problem if the 470K/470pF combo is not in the signal path. The 470K (R5) with the 470pF (C4) cap in parallel needs to be there or you will get an ugly sounding "distortion" behing the regular tone. I would put the 470K/470pF combo back in (unless of course I'm reading your post wrong)

I would really change those pre-amp tubes because that's pretty old. I normally suggest changing them once a year for moderate playing time (weekends) but it depends on the quality of preamp tubes.

I'd change the preamp tubes and go with a good set.

Groove Tubes, Sovtek, NOS RCA, it sounds like anything would be better than what you have in there now. I would suspect the preamp tubes are pretty "tired" sounding.
