Markus, Hooray for you - I am really bored shitless about comparisons between one brand/batch or 12AX7s and the other - like examining the different dress of the angels and various pinheads (hey, I'm one, I should know). And, while JimS. is correct that manufacturers can't taks a chance on tubes not currrently produced I just can't believe that experimenters/modifiers/home builders don't avail themselves of the vast quantity of non 12A_7 tubes that are out there - or even the 12AX7, etc.. variants that are out there such as the 6EU7 or the 6AV6 (1/2 12AX7 with a diode or two). Despite any rumor to the contrary a musician will not go through that many tubes in a lifetime and when you can buy NOS underused tubes for a buck or two each it's easy to buy a lifetime supply for the cost of an 12AX7 retail.
