They sound great overdriven also, if you can turn them up loud enough. Recorded examples: Keith Richard's and Mick Taylor's guitars on Rolling Stones live 1969 "Get Your Ya Yas Out"; Skunk Baxter's guitar solo on Steely Dan's "My Old School".  
 
The main drawbacks with these amps (as well as the portaflex bass amps made during this period) is that they're harder to service than Fenders. Also, replacing the filter caps requires some creativity, since the exact multi-cap cans Ampeg used aren't made anymore (you need to use LCR's and/or install terminal strips with individual e-caps, if there's enough room in the chassis). And by now, any of these amps really NEEDS to have its filter caps changed, if they're still original.
