I live in the Santa Cruz mountains.

It rains A LOT!!!

Yeah, I forgot to mention the rectifier heater. I am actually going to do this project when I finish my SE el84 with fender "brownface" tremolo. (Days away!) The Bandmaster chassis I got didn't have a PT so I found an old Heathkit PT with a 5v@3a winding. I figure with the 3amps I could use either 5y3, 5ar4, or push it with 2 5y3s. Do you think pulling 4 amps out of a 3amps rated winding is a BIG no-no, or likely just a little no-no?

Would it really be that big a deal to install a 5v tranny? Or is it just that the performance difference would be negligable? (and hence, not worth the time and effort) I guess there are plenty of ways of dropping voltage and allowing for sag with a SS rectifier. OK, thanks Bruce, I now realize that my other post may have been a bit zealous, and I now see the big-waste-of-time-implications of the mod I described. But still...if for some reason you HAD to replace the PT, and you happened to have one lying around with a rectifier filament winding, well, have I got a mod for you!

Also with the tremolo...don't some Fenders modify the bias of the driver instead of the output tubes? In this case switching from fixed to cathode bias shouldn't make a difference.
