Midi or USB?

Midi or USB?
Packaging considerations amke me think USB may work better electrically and program-ly (wha?)  
 
In my mind's eye, I have little circuit boards about 1" square that stick to the backs of the pots.  
 
The USB microcontrollers are about $1/ea in 100's, and I don't have any midi gear anyway.  
 
Apart from inertia, is there any reason not to go USB?
