So for a different perspective I'll suggest you to start fiddling with the bias of your single preamp tube. Making the stage gain asymetric and bypassing low frequencies are simple ways to achieve great half wave compression and lots of gain. What's more, established designs (like Marshall) provide an excellent direction/starting point for this effect; changing the preamp self-bias circuit from the Fender standard 1.5k/25uF to 2.7k/.68uF. This isn't your solution. Its a place to start. Good Luck. Have Fun.
