| lion | Re: Driver tube mandatory w/p.tube change? Sorry gentlemen – I think you missed my point. I’ll try to be a little clearer. I own – and have access to – a bunch of different amps, and I have a lot of tubes. Replacing practically any tube (preamp) in any position in any amp with a new (or used) tube will alter the tone (to some degree) and make the amp sound and feel different – better or worse! But that doesn’t tell you anything about the actual condition of a particular tube. Likewise with output tubes. I know of guitarists that lost some of their tone after retubing their amps. Maybe because one of the old tubes actually was on it’s way out, creating an imbalance –making the output stage producing nice overtones. Or a set of tubes that sounds really nice in one amp – move them to another amp, and they sound terrible. Get my point? Out of curiosity – and in the process of learning – I was looking for ways to valuated the condition of tubes – by measuring methodes (without a tube tester) or by visual inspection with the tube pulled from the amp or working in a circuit.
