Re: 5F6A questions
Dear JPD,

I put Hoffman's Bassman board in an amp a couple years ago and I'm still really pleased with it (it was my entry into building DIY projects, and a good halfway-house for getting started without doing everything from scratch). I'm not a master volume fan myself, but just for the hell of it while I was at it I added his switchable extra gain stage which eliminates a channel and adds a master volume, and while I don't use that switch much because I have the luxury of being able to crank the amp when necessary I was still really pleased with the results. It does add A LOT of gain, but with the master you can keep it down (though, as with all -- most? -- preamp driven high-gain setups, it can be a little tizzy at low master vol settings, but does scream like hell).

What I did also was ad another switch which takes the master vol out of the circuit completely to put you back into vintage non-master vol. mode, though yes, in some ways this is pointless as just turning the master up to 10 does essentially (exactly?) the same thing. More psychological than anything -- but I find myself also switching the master out a lot, but nice to have it there if you want to dial up a little more crunch at tolerable recording volumes.

The great thing with this design is you can add these things and if you find you don't use them, just take them out again. And if you're designing your own chassis/cab, you can squeeze in another 12AX7 even and have two channels still, one 'Normal' and the other with the switchable extra gain stage.

Have fun, whatever you do.

Dave
