I had the reverse - a ghost note that I swore was crossover distortion for days since I could move the cone and not hear any rubbing at all. A different speaker proved it was the speaker. I still kick myself for the work on biasing I did then. I certainly know to try different speakers. It's possible that the hand-pressing method can move the coil slightly off center and correct or make worse any rubbing that might/not be there. But it's a good first indication.
