| southpaw | Re: Bluesmaker Mod on Mig 50 Doc, I bought a Mig50 about a year ago, real cheap and wasn't happy with it, so, with some time on my hands, I reworked the whole thing by changing the circuit to a Marshall master volume and even added an extra triode in the front end for some serious crunch. I also had problems with the 500V secs and the heater supplies. So I bucked the PT with a 12V mini PT rated @ 3A. The HT voltage went down to 460 under load from 2 Tesla EL34's which replaced the cheesy original 5881's and the filament voltage dropped to 6V under load on all 6 tubes. I added a choke for better filtering, also added a pentode/triode switch, replaced the plastic toggles with metal ones and added a Fender style blue Jewel light. I built a cab roughly the size of a Blues DeVille 2X12 and loaded it with 35W Celestions. Used black tolex and top-mounted the chassis, tweed style. After a year of heavy use, everything is still great. The sound? typical Marshall crunch and more if you need. Best of all, it cleans up real nice with the guitar volume. The cost? roughly about $300 for the whole thing. IMHO, the Mig50 chassis is a bit small but with some patience, it's a good mod platform. I didn't have to do all this to it, but it was a very satisfying project. I guess it's still a Sovtek but I'm not sure I want to put that name on it now. |
