I used to use sovtek 12ax7's, but the ei's were better. As a side note, my amp came with the spax7 tubes, and the rubber band thing did nothing to solve the oscillation at really hi gain problem. I've got a set of groove tubes el84's #5 in the amp now, but I would probably buy a set of sovtek el84-m tubes instead from Ned at triodeel.com.
