Hmm, I tried tapping the whole board with no luck.  
 
I changed most of the electrolytic caps with no result.  
 
The "lava boiling/constant crackle" sound follows (only) the master volume up and down.  
 
Could I search with a cold spray and/or a hair drier for bad connections inside components?
