I have a AB165 from 66 that I reverted to AA864. It seems to distort around 4-5 as well but i have an impedence mismatch so I'm not getting full efficient power transfer. Its quite loud at this volume though. I found that good NOS 6L6's really improved the tone and the clean headroom as well.  
I have heard you can try out a 5751 in the preamp to see what this does to reduce preamp distortion if this is what you are encountering.  
Also I found that jumpering the channels improves the cleain volume as well.
