Jim, what cabinet and speakers are you running ? and b.t.w. I used to hold that the terrific distortion in some of my fave amps was mainly due to the output stage clipping but have recently had to "face the music" so to speak to admit that a great deal of it is in the preamp, even on the older (read non-p.c. board) units. By "mush" do you mean farty bass?
