I have been sorely tempted to try a distortion box with them such as a Hot Box; I bet they would work great as far as size goes, I would guess better results on a lowered plate voltage too. Plus, there has been talk on Ampage about cascode front ends in place of pentodes, the nuvistors would probably work good in this type of circuit. Whoa, I'm starting to plan projects again..... I have used 2CW4 and 6CW4 nuvistors in low level circuits, all RCA. The 2CW4's were much more prone to microphonics than the 6CW4's. Plus, a 12" ID rubber grommet is a perfect fit over the nuvistor case and really helps cut down on the microphonics. Oh, one more thing, nuvistors seem to be sensitive to noise on their heaters, i.e. less hum with DC heater supplies. |
