"I originally used the see-saw phase splitter so that I could use a 12AU7 tube with negative feedback and still get good phase balance. When I changed to the 12AX7 I didn't bother changing it. I don't unbalance the phases on purpose, I prefer the sound with them balanced.

Also, the see-saw makes it very easy to implement NFB and compensation, and seems to have about twice the gain of the normal one. Since I'm using small plate and bias resistors, I need the extra gain."

The only reason I ask is because you can get a better CMRR with a shared tail current, which means in your case moving the injection point of the NFB and using a single cathode resistor. If you're using the 12ax7 I think it would work very well. Of course if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you like its operation it doesn't make a difference!

Interesting--that must give you a great deal of control over the characteristics of the overdrive, as opposed to having it later on in the circuit where it would affect the ultimate frequency response. Do you have a certain range of settings that you like best?

I tried running a couple of el34's in pentode mode with ZNFB yesterday. It sounded like crap! I'm gonna try triode mode today, but I hate giving up that much power.

This is to try to save my back from permanent curvature. Lugging the BAGA to gigs is getting on my nerves, so I need something a bit lighter and more portable in the 100W range.
