Having said that, I'm currently working on a design with the tubes sticking horizontally out the back ('tubes sideways') This gives good heat flow, you can put the controls anywhere, and it's the only way of fitting tall tubes like the EL34 into a 3-unit high rack case. Most valves are quite happy sideways, although large ones like the KT88 need to be mounted in a certain orientation so the screen wires don't sag. Steve.
