| MKB | Re: EF-86 & Dr. Z Route 66 Questions Hi folks. I have had pretty good luck at hamfests finding oil caps. Some are not of normal appearance; they may be in a square box that mounts to the chassis. I have replaced a polypropylene coupling cap in my class A 211 amp with a Sprague Vitamin Q; massive difference. It definitely makes things a lot smoother. Haven't tried them in a guitar amp however, but I plan to soon. BTW, the consensus I've read among the hifi guys is that oil caps are good if you are passing a lot of voltage through them, as where Dr.Z uses them (output of phase inverter). They tend to muddy things up in small signal apps, like early in a preamp. Dug out the Jan. 1999 GP with the Route 66 review over the weekend. Not wanting to totally reverse engineer the circuit, but would a good low loss tone control circuit be found in, say, a AC30TB or a Matchless DC30? |
