There is a Mesa sanctioned mod that does something close to that. The "Lead Drive mod". It does not give the Lead mode a totally independent control -- it still is dependent on where the normal "Volume" control is set. Basically you replace a 470k resistor with a 500k pot; and there may be a little more, although I can't recall off the top of my head right now. What it offers is that if you like the clean mode with the "Volume" control up, but don't care for that much gain in Lead mode, you can adjust the Lead mode to lower gain settings without compromising the clean mode.
