Some mods:  
 
1) Use a 12AT7 or 12AU7 for the "lead mode" tube (the one with both sections in parallel) for less gain. The lead mode becomes much more usable.  
 
2) Install a pot or trimpot so that you can adjust the lead gain independently from the rythm gain. You may want to look at the "Subway" schematic to get the idea...  
 
3) Mod the FX loop to parallel - again have a look at the Subway.  
 
4) If the amp has not a built-in graphic EQ, put one in the FX loop - it definetely helps to get rid of the excess of buzz.
