This is a very high gain amplifier, and if you aren't super-careful with grounding and all that, it will either oscillate or NEARLY oscillate. I have had the experience with amps that NEARLY oscillate, that they 'ring' when you send in a signal. You can see this easily on the scope. Without the scope the symptoms are as you describe-- it works but it sounds horrible and farty.
