I am not certain just why, but the LPS reduced the gain of the preamp. Ruby 7025s work the best in the gain channel, followed by, get this, CHEAPO Chinese tubes. I queried a Mesa tech about this and he claimed that is what they designed the amp around and that the circuit tends to like percussive tubes. Armed with this information I put in JJ/Teslas in the gain circuit and that is what is in there now. The clean section uses the Sovtek 12AX7LPS. I also put them into a Champ, a Pignose or two (G40 and G60), and I use them in my '77 Twin Reverb. Excellent clean rivalled only by the Tele ECC83 IMO. Maybe I lucked out, but the LPS tubes in the batch I got have been great. Sure wish the Ruby 7025STR would rematerialize though... Barry
