The first would be known as motorboating, while the second could be the crackle (and pop) of a bad plate load resistor. Or other things..."     A bad filter cap will cause hum, not a popping sound. A popping sound can be caused, as suggested above, by bad plate load resistors, or bad screen grid resistors, or bad tubes, etc. The plate loads on those amps are CC some of them 1/2 watters, so the resistors may have slowly started cooking over the years. I would check than and the screen grids.     Gil
