| dave | Beef vs. Saturation Actually I have both of those transformers...The Blues deluxe OT in a spitfire clone and the 2-4-8 50 watt universal in a 5E7 clone. Both amps souns great, but I don't really know how much of that is attributed to the OT. I was thinking of the Hammond 1650K (50 watts), since the primary Z is 3.4K, right on for the El34s, or possibly the 30 or 50 watt hoffmann OT. Thinking about it, the 35 watt (Blues Deluxe replacement) OT with a pri-Z of 4K seems like it might be a good match. To tell you the truth, I really don't know what to expect the major differences in performance to be. Some people prefer an OT that will saturate at higher volumes, while other say 'the beefier the better'. Without knowing any better, or doing A/B tests (hard to do with OTs), I'm guessing I'd be happier with a beefier OT. I guess it depends ones playing style and tonal preferences. Dave R. |
