Of course, you are correct in that the official first pre-amp tube is a 12AY7 and I have plenty of these NOS. I still have used 12AX7/7025's in both positions for years. There is quite a bit of variance in these as well, I can measure some brand new GE 7025s down to 35 transconductance, and then some Ruby or WXT's at 48/50, so I wouldn't bet that a 12AY7 is always going to be lower gain than any 12AX7 today. What the 12AX7 in position 1 lets you do is to more easily overdrive the preamp section with a high input level, not so much from pickups, though probalby possible, but I mean from a reverb or pre-amp with a variable output gain.
