Re: JBL Speakers
There is a noticeable brightness in the high end of the JBLs, due in part to the thin aluminum dome dust cap at the center of the cone. It radiates somewhat like a tweeter. Most speaketrs have a soft pole cover, like felt or paper, which essentially adds no contribution to the output spectrum.

These speakers are typically seen in Twin Reverbs used for surf guitar music, and sometimes steel guitar. I know a guy who plays Jery Garcia stuff (a band called Splintered Sunlight) who plays thru a SF Twin with a pair of those 12" JBLs and nails the tone (although JG was known to use E-V spkrs). Playing a maple fretboard guitar tyhrough an amp using these speakers may create a sound that seems brittle on the top end, where a similar guitar with a rosewood FB might be ok.

I know it's heresy, but I've wondered if replacing the metal dust caps with paper might make these otherwise excellent sounding (Alnico?) speakers that much better for most guitar.
