Remember, by lowering the driving impedance you are pushing up the -3dB frequency that will naturally occur with any kind of downstream capactiance, whether it be just stray inter-wiring capactiance, or even the associated grid capactiance(s) of another tube stage.  
 
 
 
That will tend to make the sound brighter, which is, as we all know, the same thing as less bassy. What you need then is to simply cut some of that extra HF somewhere along the chain.  
 
 
 
And make it variable, of course. There's always room for another goddamned knob.
