The other guys have answered the questions as well as I can so I'll just add that any quality transformer should end up with a good sounding amp based on the SLO design. Since the SLO uses proprietary DeYoung transformers, none of us are going to nail the sound but since none of the cloners have actually played one, it's an unknown target. Personally I think that is a good thing. I would rather have a kick ass original sound than a copy of the same amp anyone can buy if they have enough money. But that is just me :)  
 
Of the 4 I have used, I would have to rate the OEI plexi replacement as #1, the Hoffman generic Bassman replacement as #2, the Drake in my JCM800 as #3 tied with my SF Bassman's orginal transformer. But any one of them is much better sounding to me than my Marshall '74 or '77 SuperLeads.
