I may be full of sh*t, but I'd like to relate a story that was passed on to me by a few very clever engineers. It may help you.
An output transformer designed for class A is balanced and rated for a 100% duty cycle. An output transformer mass produced and intended for class AB2 amplifiers is never balanced and rated for a 50% duty cycle. The hum cancelling advantages of class AB2 are negated by using cathode bias. You may not even be in true class A. Switch over to class AB2 and try it. Without hearing your hum it's hard to pinpoint it, but I though I'd share that tid bit. It taught me the hard way about using class A circuits with cheap, regular OPTs.
