| todd | Re: Building Speaker cab's Hey, Paul. As far as closed vs. open-back goes, I'd say it depends on what kind of music you're playing. For crunchy rock tones, I'd suggest a closed back design. An open-back would be fine for clean stuff like surf or country (open-back is mandatory for surf!), smoky jazz tones, or warm overdriven blues sounds. These are just guidelines, though. In my experience, open-back designs have a fuller bottom end, because the speakers vibrate without a sealed pocket of air restricting them. It's almost subliminal, though, because the low frequencies tend to wrap around the enclosure and cancel out a bit. They are still there, just attenuated a bit. Closed-back cabinets have a reputation for resonant bass and "tighter" response. I prefer the tighter closed-back feel, but I'm really finicky about the sound. The problem for me is that the resonance of the speakers is usually shifted higher in frequency by the air suspension, and becomes more pronounced. What you hear as a bass boost is actually a peak close to the second octave on you guitar. You don't get the same low end "bloom" of an open-back cab. IMO, this is why people get so tired of hear heavy metal guitar tones, the constant "whoo-whoo-whoo" around 160Hz. As far as 15" vs. 10", go with 10s if you what a punchier sound, or a 15 if you're looking for more girth in your sound. Tens tend to be brighter, also. These are just rules-of-thumb, and there are exceptions. It sounds like your amp has an 8 ohm output, so, if you use 4 10s, they must be 8ohms each in a series-parallel setup. If you use 2 15s, they must be either 4ohms each in series, or 16ohms each in parallel If you want to build a closed-back cabinet, check out the cabinet calculators at www.webervst.com. I know this was long. Sorry. I hope it helps, though. Take care. todd |
