Whenever my finances let me, I keep a quad of 6550's in any high gain amp. In my opinion, if you've got an already hot preamp signal, the EL-34's breaking up just make the sound muddy and undefined. 6L6's arn't too bad for high gain, in specific the Tesla's or Svet's, but 6550's just help keep the sound focused and solid all the way to full power... That's just my $0.02, hope it helps. -Ryan
