I also love this tube and generally like the sound much more than I like the 6BQ5/EL84 - I often design around them. As far as ethical issues, while the supply will eventually dry up, this tube was made in great quantities and they are available and cheap - lots of these in military stocks.  
Generally, when I design around an orphan tube I supply the amp buyer with a reasonable "lifetime" supply of tubes at purchase. Usually three sets of output tubes - one in circuit. One may argue about "lifetime" but I've seen many 50s Fenders come in with some or all of the original factory tubes. Just design conservatively for long tube life.
