I used cheap radio shack 1N4148 Diodes.

Well these are the ones I used. First ones in of a package of 10(NPN and PNP's)(in order to experiment)worked.  
 
Although I need to put back in 56K resistors, instead of 66K as my original has? Wounder if it makes a difference.
