I've tried that and it didn't work too well. That top device just acts as a variable resistor anyway. It does work if you put a j201 JFET on the top, and an irf510 MOSFET on the bottom. Need the 1M d-g feedback resistor on the bottom, and have to pull the 1M going to gnd up to 4.5v.  
 
Like I mentioned before, not a lot of gain on it's own, but if you slam with a high gain stage in front of it, the overdrive is pretty cool.
