I manufacture a ring modulator (the Frostwave Blue Ringer) based on a 4-quadrant multiplier chip. It is difficult to get really good results without +- 15 volt rails. The synth-diy sites have ring modualtors based on the AD633 and also the Motorola balanced modulator, MC1496 from memory.
